Cinema in perenne opposizione al sistema. Cinema come espressione di dissenso, di riluttanza, sempre dalla parte degli oppressi e degli emarginati. Si riparte dalle rovine, dagli anfratti nauseabondi degli sconfitti, di chi ricerca la speranza nella rivoluzione, reale e tangibile. Questo il filo conduttore che muove e contraddistingue l’operato del cineasta portoghese Pedro Costa (1959, Lisbona, Portogallo), questa la chiave per interpretare una filmografia carica di indignazione, rabbia, delusione ma anche di fiducia in quel riscatto che deve ripartire dalle ceneri di un’umanità sepolta nelle macerie. Se fin dalle primissime opere Costa aveva mostrato parvenze refrattarie all’evoluzione personale e ideologicamente densa di significati, rifacendosi forse eccessivamente ad un Cinema poco attuale, ma soprattutto stilisticamente poco adatto ai tempi correnti, vedasi Blood (O Sangue, 1989) – omaggio in chiave molto personale al cinema noir tanto amato dal regista, già con Ossos (1997) vira con decisione verso un binomio immagine-significante e immagine rivoluzionaria decisamente unico nel panorama cinematografico suo contemporaneo.

Il suo, infatti, è un Cinema viscerale seppur minuzioso e perfezionista. Un Cinema che, soprattutto negli anni di passaggio tra il ventesimo ed il ventunesimo secolo, attua una svolta che si materializza a sua volta in repentino cambio di prospettiva, nel conferire all’oggetto dell’attenzione un termine prettamente sociale, nel cioè volgere lo sguardo verso la miseria del suo popolo e le sue più bieche realtà, dunque sovviene immediatamente In Vanda’s Room (No Quarto da Vanda, 2000). Qui, i tempi si dilatano notevolmente, come già accennato, il valore artistico dell’opera prende forma nella concezione dello spazio e nell’immersione totale dello spettatore in esso, non tanto per ricercare in quest’ultimo compassione o immedesimazione, quanto proprio per far comprendere al meglio la realtà rappresentata inserendo lo stesso in uno scenario ben preciso (non è un mistero, infatti, che la lavorazione di In Vanda’s Room costò notevoli fatiche al regista stesso a causa della sua convinta ricerca di coerenza e veridicità nel riprendere la routine giornaliera di una tossicomane).
