Il 1854 è l’anno in cui il Giappone apre le porte al commercio internazionale, facendo conoscere
un mondo fino ad allora sconosciuto e stimolando la fantasia degli artisti occidentali.
È grazie alla nascente industria fotografica e al lavoro del noto fotografo dell’epoca Kozaburo Tamamura che è giunta fino a noi un’interessante collezione di foto dipinte a mano e risalenti all’inizio del XX secolo. Si tratta delle prime immagini utilizzate per promuovere il Giappone nel resto del mondo e ritraggono splendide scene di vita quotidiana e paesaggi dalla straordinaria bellezza.
