Ambientato in una sperduta e umida località degli U.S.A., Hide Your Smiling Faces vede come protagonisti due giovani fratelli costretti a fare i conti con l'elaborazione del lutto in seguito alla morte di un amico del minore dei due.
Eric, il più grande, fa fatica ad accettare la scomparsa prematura di un bambino e - non riuscendo a trovare una spiegazione razionale - si ribella manifestando rabbia e comportamenti insoliti.
Tommy, il minore (nonché amico di Ian, il bimbo morto), predilige invece la tranquillità e la compagnia della natura, quasi alla ricerca di una sorta di "segno contemplativo" che possa aiutarlo a metabolizzare l'accaduto.
Teatri di questa vicenda sono spesso la foresta, il lago - Madre Natura, insomma - ripresi davvero bene dal punto di vista fotografico e capaci di suggestionare lo spettatore.
Lungometraggio indipendente non trascendentale e volutamente "silenzioso" a tratti, ma quantomeno ritengo più che apprezzabile lo sforzo profuso nel sottolineare l'aspetto introspettivo dei vari personaggi.
Consigliato a coloro hanno voglia di vedere qualcosa di più "ricercato".
