Il brāhmana Dona vide il Buddha seduto sotto un albero e fu tanto colpito dall'aura consapevole e serena che emanava, nonché dallo splendore del suo aspetto, che gli chiese:
– Sei per caso un dio?
– No, brāhmana, non sono un dio.
– Allora sei un angelo?
– No davvero, brāhmana.
– Allora sei uno spirito?
– No, non sono uno spirito.
– Allora sei un essere umano?
– No, brahmana, io non sono un essere umano [...]
– [...] E allora, che cosa sei? [...]
– [...] Io sono sveglio. »[/size]
Cos'è dunque questo nulla? Come si può descriverlo se è indicibile? Il buddhismo ricorre alla metafora dell'onda. Un'onda non cade dall'acqua dall'esterno, ma proviene dall'acqua senza separarsene. Scompare e torna all'acqua da cui ha tratto origine e non lascia nell'acqua la minima traccia di sé. Come onda si solleva dall'acqua e torna all'acqua. Come acqua esso è il movimento dell'acqua. Come onda l'acqua sorge e tramonta, e come acqua non sorge e non tramonta. Così l'acqua forma mille e diecimila onde e tuttavia resta in sé costante e immutata.
Così rispose ad un tale che sosteneva che non esistesse il movimento: si alzò e si mise a camminare" (Diogene)
