1868. Nel momento del declino dello shogunato, le truppe imperiali sono impegnate a liberare i villaggi dal dominio Tokugawa. Il soldato Gonzo quando la truppa a cui appartiene si trova vicino al suo villaggio natale, che l'uomo ha lasciato dieci anni prima, ottiene il permesso dal comandante di andare avanti e portare il messaggio del rinnovamento tra i contadini suoi amici. Gonzo finge di avere un ruolo importante nell'esercito, ma arrivato nel villaggio trova una situazione difficile con il popolo oppresso da amministratori e mercanti corrotti. Trailer

Jidaigeki ambientato poco prima della fine dello shogunato Tokugawa, abbastanza particolare perché la storia è raccontata anche con toni da commedia (in certi momenti), ma rimane in fondo drammatica e riflette pure sul potere.
Il grande cast (Mifune nei panni di un personaggio che balbetta un po') aiuta a regalare una visione piacevole.


Segnalo in archivio la presenza dei sottotitoli di quello che è probabilmente il miglior film di questo regista (Okamoto):
