Trama. Ninomiya Kyonosuke è un contadino, nato e cresciuto nella regione montuosa di Hida, che sogna di diventare un samurai. La sua occasione arriva quando un nobile di passaggio si accorge della somiglianza fisica con il signore del territorio, Ikemoto Yasutaka. Kyonosuke lascia così il villaggio, viene addestrato all’uso delle armi e istruito per impersonare all’occorrenza il padrone: diventa una delle sue tre “ombre”.


Commento. Notevole jidai-geki non troppo lontano come livello dai grandi classici del genere firmati da nomi ben più noti di Umetsugu Inoue. Da non confondere con "Kagemusha" di Akira Kurosawa, con il quale condivide la sorte del protagonista che diventa un guerriero ombra, un sosia del signore feudale, e di riflesso il tema dell'identità. Che forse poteva anche essere sviluppato con maggiore decisione essendo uno dei fondamenti del racconto stesso.

Curiosità. Il film è tratto da un libro di Norio Nanjo e la stessa storia è stata anche adattata in un manga pubblicato in due volumi in Italia, da Magic Press, con il titolo "Kagemusha - Il terzo guerriero ombra".
