Film monumentale. La bravura di Ichikawa rende magnifico visivamente ciò che ucciderebbe chiunque non ami lo sport (come me). Sperimentale nelle inquadrature e nel montaggio, è un potente affresco sulla teatralità del movimento, che il grande regista giapponese inquadra alla perfezione. Tecnica magnifica, trovate visive geniali e straordinarie le musiche, talvolta jazzate, altre volte quasi imperiali. Tre ore che, tutto sommato, scorrono bene, salvo qualche momento in cui l'attenzione dello spettatore, francamente, viene a mancare.
Straordinaria la sequenza di ginnastica artistica, dove i corpi delle atlete si sdoppiano, triplicano, balzano, su sfondo nero. Ottima anche la lunghissima scena della maratona.
