Nel periodo Edo, un ronin senza nome accetta un particolare incarico: andare in un valico di montagna e aspettare lì nuove indicazioni per svolgere il suo compito non ancora precisato. Nei pressi del passo si ferma in una locanda, dove incontra una serie di personaggi tra cui una donna che aveva in precedenza salvato dal marito violento.

Avvincente, ma non mancano le ingenuità. Si poteva fare di più, anche perché il cast è di quelli di serie A.
Mifune sempre il (solito) ruolo più figo; particolare invece quello di Nakamura Kinnosuke
